I’m loathe to say much more about the plot, which is predominantly composed of a series of cascading revelations about the companies that control Mal’s life and the lives of her friends. Propulsively paced and filled to the brim with engaging sci-fi ideas, Firebreak is a novel for our time, and one of the better future-spec thrillers I’ve read in a while. In this thrilling cyberpunk novel, set in a future where every aspect of life is controlled by omniscient mega-corporations, gamer Mal stumbles onto a startling secret that threatens to unravel everything she believes, and could very well lead to the downfall of the corporations themselves. Published May 4th, 2021 by Gallery/Saga Press The Upshot: A thrilling anti-corporate cyberpunk story with engaging worldbuilding and grisly action that unfortunately fails to truly resolve the central tensions by the climax.
